In a first in India, Max Super Speciality Hospital Implants Mobile App-Linked Next-Gen Device for Remote Monitoring of Heart Health

Agra, September 22 2020: In a first in the country, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, a leading provider of comprehensive, seamless and integrated healthcare services, has successfully implanted a mobile app-linked, and Gallant technology-based cardioverter defibrillator in a 56-year old male patient, here on 29th February, gifting him the assurance of remote monitoring of cardiac health, and the experience of feeling connected with his medical team.

Though belonging to the family of Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs), the implanted one is a next-generation device (from Abbott’s Gallant technology) that offers Bluetooth connectivity and a patient smartphone app. It was approved by the US FDA in July this year.

The implant procedure was performed by a team of medical experts, under the leadership of Dr Balbir Singh, Chairman, Cardiac Sciences, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket. The patient was from a remote location in Northern India. He presented at Max Hospital, Delhi, with complaints of presyncope, lightheadedness or the sensation of feeling faint without actually fainting. The patient had earlier undergone a Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting surgery, a procedure to improve poor blood flow to the heart. At the time of admission, the ejection fraction (LVEF) of his left ventricle was 35% - which meant that the outflow of blood from the heart, each time it contracted, was low.

Explaining why his team of doctors thought it best to use this device on the patient, Dr Balbir Singh, said, it’s like having a control on the patient from far away.

The medical team discussed with the patient about the benefits of Gallant ICDs for patients who suffer from reduced cardiac function and life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms. As the patient was convinced, and opted for Gallant ICD implantation, the surgery was performed successfully. Post implant, the patient mobile app was easily and quickly connected.

“The new Gallant ICDs bring the most advanced heart rhythm management capabilities for people with abnormal heart rhythms and heart failure. They enable us to monitor our patients remotely and identify episodes of life-threatening abnormal heart rates in them. These features help us to be early with medical interventions.” After the implant started the COVID epidemic in India but it was fortunate patient stayed at home and we could monitor his heart sitting in the clinic.” said Dr. Balbir Singh, Chairman, Head of Cardiology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi

The Gallant devices are definitely next generation, not only in technology, but also in telehealth, patient care, and peace of mind of physicians and patients. The implantation reinforces Max Hospitals’ commitment to incorporate advanced technologies that will help improve health outcomes and patient experience."

Gallant ICDs also prove useful during the pandemic as they help physicians catch undiagnosed heart abnormalities in patients who are not able to avail routine checkups.
