Head and neck cancers are very common in India constituting 30% of all the cancers due to the widespread consumption of tobacco in the country.
Despite being easily detectable, treatable, and more importantly preventable forms of cancer, India ranks no 1 in terms of number of Head and Neck cancer patients in the world.
As per the Globacan 2020 India data, 13.24 Lakh new cases were registered out of which 11.42% were attributed to mortality from oral cancer. Head and neck cancers, especially among men including lip, oral cavity and oesophageal cancers are ranked second. Such cancers overall have attributed to around 25% mortality, and there is 18% rise in the number of new cancer patients registered in India last year.
“Due to lack of awareness people usually neglect the early symptoms and often reach a hospital at an advanced stage of the disease. It is important to understand and spread awareness about cancer treatment and the ways to prevent it with slight lifestyle modification and self-examination. While better and advanced technologies are available, it is equally important to spread the message of early detection as the symptoms get neglected and are diagnosed late. Common symptoms like mouth sores that doesn’t heal, difficulty and pain while swallowing, and reddish or a white patch that is persistent inside the mouth, should not be ignored. As ignoring such symptoms can lead to development of lumps and can convert into malignant tumors causing cancer,” Said Dr. Sumant Bollu – Associate Consultant, Head & Neck Oncology at Max Hospital Vaishali.
Head and neck cancer surgeries, with the advent of robot assisted surgeries have become ‘scarless’ ensuring minimum scarring on the survivor’s face and neck area. Newly advanced robotic surgery has provided an innovative approach in the treatment of cancer. Providing with a 3-dimensional view, robot-assisted console helps the surgeon to operate in closed, narrow spaces where it may be difficult to perform laparoscopic surgery. For the patients, there is less blood loss, less pain and requires shorter stay at hospital.
