Meerut,17 Feb 2021: Citing to the increasing burden of neurology related ailments affecting the brain and spinal cord, India’s leading healthcare provider, Max Super Specialty Hospital Patparganj, New Delhi, organised an interactive session today. The motive of the session was to raise awareness about the advanced minimally invasive treatment modules available for complications including the brain and spine.
Dr Amitabh Goel, Neuro Surgery, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Patparganj, addressed the gathering and shed light on the growing incidence of brain & spine problems amongst people in tier III cities. Emphasis was also laid on the rising cases of neurological problems among all age groups. Showcasing the successful cases of two patient from Meerut, who were successfully treated for various neurological ailments and having a better quality of life, Dr Amitabh Goel highlighted the importance of timely intervention.
Patient Sabiya Ansari, had tingling like sensation on the left side of the face along with left tinnitus (Ringing noise inside the ear), which had developed into recurrent headache with on and off frequency for over 6 months. She had been neglecting the symptoms until the headache and ringing noise in the left ear persisted. Detailed investigations at a local hospital in Meerut revealed a benign tumor in the brainstem, and was referred to Max Hospital Patparganj, New Delhi.
“Such tumors are one of the riskiest tumors to be removed, as in some cases, post-surgical events may result in permanent disability in all the four limbs. Pertaining to the size and location of the tumor and her debilitating condition, she was advised for a endoscopy assisted retromastoid Craniotomy. It is a minimally invasive, safe, keyhole procedure performed through an incision behind the ear, to create a small bony opening for accessing the tumor in the brain stem. The surgery went very well and the team was able to remove the entire tumor. Post operatively the patient was neurologically stable, conscious, awake, accepted orally and was discharged in a healthy condition.” Said Dr Amitabh Goel.
With the surgical expertise and advanced technology available, even the most complicated and hard to access, sensitive tumors can be removed with low risk involved with positive outcomes. Around 50% of the brain tumors are non-cancerous and if treated properly, enhances the outcomes with patients resuming to normal life as before.
Though conventional open surgery remains an alternative, but with a serious risk of blood loss, cosmetic appeal and even permanent paralysis/ disability. Given the size of the tumor, the risk would not have been advisable. This is where such surgeries becomes effective and risk-free, due to minimal pain, maintaining the cosmetic appeal, precise and minimally invasive.
Another patient from Meerut, Vikas Agarwal, had complaints of lower back pain that radiated to both his legs for over 2 months and was initially managed conservatively and had temporary pain relief. But gradually the recurrence of pain not only worsened but also accompanied by inability to walk.
“MRI reports revealed a large disc extrusion with Caudal Migration in the lumbar section of the spine and was advised for a microscopic discectomy procedure. Making use of high-end microscope to view the affected disc and nerves, the herniated disc was surgically removed successfully. The patient made a swift recovery with subsided pain, and is no more in need of pain killer medications. His quality of life has improved drastically.” Added Dr Goel.
Back or neck pain should not be neglected. Early treatment can solve the pain and the root cause of the problem within a short span of time providing complete recovery. Risk of surgeries can be avoided with early diagnosis and proper treatment helping a person live a better life without back pain and spinal problems.
