A dialogue session was organized by Max Super Specialty Hospital Patparganj today to discuss the growing cases of head and neck cancer and to explain the progress made in the treatment method. In this, giving information about the case of 45-year-old Gajendra of Gwalior, the doctors informed about the state-of-the-art treatment of head and neck cancer and the progress made in it.
Gajendra was suffering from a painful ulcer in the right cheek and was brought to Max Hospital Patparganj, New Delhi last year. Due to difficulty in eating and drinking and pain in opening the mouth, he was advised to undergo biopsy and stage of the disease. The pain was increasing and the report also showed that the tumor had spread to his mouth and throat.
Due to the formation of submuscus fibrosis (a type of tumor in which the mouth is not open), the trismus (the position of the mouth completely closed) reached the verge of eating and drinking. Due to not getting treatment at the right time, he had reached a worse condition for months. The team of doctors immediately underwent her first chemotherapy because the tumor had grown too much. The patient was prepared for surgery after chemotherapy.
Tobacco use is considered the leading cause of head and neck cancer. But more than 90 percent of these cases can be cured. According to the National Cancer Registry Program (NCRP) of the Indian Council of Medical Research, one in three cases of cancer comes from the sick states.
Of the total cases of cancer recorded in the country during 2020 (13.24 lakh cases), 2.65 lakh new cases are of head and neck cancer. According to Globacan Data 2020, head and neck cancer is the second largest case of all cancers in men. Mouth cancer is the sixth largest cause of death in the world and more than 45% of these cases come from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Dr. Saurabh Arora, head of the head and neck surgical oncology department at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Patparganj, New Delhi, said, 'Since the patient and his family were apprehensive about the treatment, they were counseled about the surgery. After successful treatment of the patient, the tumor was removed and the neck tube was corrected. This was followed by reconstruction surgery to restore the limb's precursor. After surgery, the patient was given radiotherapy and chemotherapy. After undergoing regular checkups, his tumor disappeared and his voice returned to normal and he started eating and drinking again. The patient can be fully cured by early detection of a oral lesion. Anyone who is in greater danger should be aware of the cavity of their mouth and should undergo an examination once a month.
This dialogue session also explained the disadvantages of tobacco consumption in any form. Also, people were advised to adopt healthy habits and keep regular checkups. Doctors emphasized that if there are red or white rashes or wounds in the mouth for more than three weeks, then it is necessary to seek medical attention immediately.
Dr. Arora said, 'In the absence of awareness, people usually ignore the initial symptoms and come to the hospital only after the disease has reached the advanced stage. It is very important to spread awareness about the treatment of cancer and to know about improving lifestyle and introspection to avoid this disease. Better and state-of-the-art treatment for cancer has become available, but it is equally important to make people aware of the initial symptoms. Early symptoms such as any sores in the mouth or difficulty getting out should not be ignored. By ignoring them, the disease will increase and after a time it will take the form of cancer, whose treatment will be difficult for the patient from every point of view.
